Sappho was a musician, and the first female writer known to Western civilization, termed by Homer as “the Poet,” and by Plato as “the tenth Muse”. Though much of her personal life has been disputed, her extant lyrics are among the first writing about desire between women. Today, all of Sappho’s music is lost, and all but one poem of hers survived in completion, the rest lives on in fragments. Through this javascript-built site, users are invited to fill in the blanks and share their musings, as well as read the writings left behind by the last visitor. However, the memory of the site is rather short-term. As a new user records a new memory, the old is forgotten, in a writing platform that is as ephemeral as the poet’s original verses. Self-initiated.
